Working It Out

by Jeanine Detz

Jeanine's headshotAs Shape's senior fitness editor, I get to try fun new classes, meet talented trainers, and check out workout clothing and gear before it hits the stores. And in this blog, I'm going to share all of that with you! From my favorite new ways to stay fit to the pants that make my butt look perky you're going to hear it all. And along the way, I hope to hear from you too.

Wet-Naps for my Body...Brilliant

As part of my "squeeze in a workout whenever" philosophy, I hit the gym at lunchtime yesterday. I did the elliptical for a half-hour, stretched, and then freaked out when I looked at the clock. (Mid-day workouts apparently don't leave time for showers.) So today I brought along these Power Shower wipes ($3.95; trisports.com). They smell fresh, not flowery, and one was enough for me to wipe down all my sweaty spots. In less than two minutes—and thanks to a quick swipe of lip-gloss—I looked and felt refreshed enough to head back to work.

Born to Run

I don't fancy myself a runner. In fact, I don't really like to run. Why then is my favorite workout song Born to Run? There's just something about the chorus that fires me up. Whether I'm walking, on the elliptical, or lifting weights, I push a little harder when I hear it—and that's what makes a killer workout song.

Every month I create a playlist to go with the plan in "Workout Express." When I first started, the mixes were lifted straight from my iPod, which meant lots of alternative rock and Jersey bands (don't even think about knocking Bon Jovi). But I now consult friends, co-workers, and even the billboard charts for ideas. My favorite song right now: Good Time by the Brazilian Girls (I have to thank my friend Steve for introducing me to this band a few years ago.)

So tell me: who or what should I be listening to this month? I want to hear about your favorite band, album, or song for working out. Who knows, maybe you'll see your pick on the pages of Shape.

Say 'ohm' instead of cheers

When I can carve out an hour for a workout, I hit the weights for a 20-minute strength session and then blast calories on a cardio machine (side shuffles on the treadmill are my new obsession—turn sideways, hold the rail with one hand, and stay low as you shuffle). I'm a gym rat...one of those odd people who actually enjoys ending a workout with a sweaty red face and shaky legs. That being said, I rarely do yoga. But Pure Yoga,a beautiful new studio, recently opened on East 89th Street in New York City. With topiary on the building, fountains at the check-in desk, and a huge comfy lounge, this place feels more like a fancy spa than a studio. So tonight I convinced my friend Carol to meet me there after work. (Remember, I'm taking my own advice—meeting friends for a workout instead of dinner is part of it!) We had our pick from six classes, and opted for vinyasa. An hour later, I felt rejuvenated and bendy—and I remembered that a workout doesn't have to include hefting weights and heart-pounding cardio.

If you live in New York, check out Pure Yoga (pureyoga.com). Or, pop in a yoga DVD like Desiree Bartlett's Yoga for Beginners (she's got a easy-going vibe that I love). P.S. I have to confess: Carol and I did hit our favorite French restaurant for dinner after our yoga class. But we skipped our usual cheese plate and only had one glass of wine each. We're only human!

Ah, the pressure

It happened again last night: While talking to a friend of a friend at dinner, I mentioned what I do for a living, and she said, "Wow, you must work out all the time." The truth is, I used to exercise regularly (and I had the toned arms and flat abs to prove it). But lately with traveling to photo shoots, meeting (and missing a few) deadlines, and planning my wedding I've gotten a wee bit softer and much slower. And that's not okay for someone who writes about and loves fitness! So a few weeks ago, I decided to take my own advice—everything I write in the magazine every month. I told myself, 'When you don't have time for a full workout, squeeze in 15 minutes'; 'If you don't feel like going to the gym, lace up your sneakers anyway'; and 'Instead of meeting your friends for dinner and drinks, make a workout date."

I've really been following that first recommendation by walking home from work. It's 1.8 miles door to door and while I don't speed walk, I keep up a moderate pace the entire way. Sometimes I listen to my iPod, often I call my dad, but one thing's always the same: By the time I get home, my legs are tired and my head feels clear. Hey, what's your favorite way to squeeze in exercise? (Please don't tell me you park in the farthest spot at the mall...I live in New York City!)
